For many years, Swedish furniture and household articles of silver, glass and ceramic have everywhere been prized for their rare beauty and fine design. It is not well known, however, to what an extent the modern Swedish arts rest on a rich background of hand-crafted work made by Swedish peasants for their households, dating from as much as a thousand years ago to the middle of the 19th Century. It is around these hand-crafted articles, particularly of the 18th and 19th Centuries, that this book is centered. Iona Plath, one of the foremost American textile designers, made extensive trips to Sweden in preparing this book, and thanks to her research and the generous assistance of Swedish museum officials, she has assembled a magnificent collection, much of it not elsewhere available.

In a brief introduction, Miss Plath's informative text relates the cultural history of Sweden and the varying traditions of its provinces. Successive chapters each take up a different craft medium: textiles, ceramics, metals, glass, wood, and wall paintings. In captions and text, the uses of hundreds of household articles are described, with details on their manufacture and local customs, if any, associated with them. It is the over 500 photographs, however, that form the heart and essential impression of the book. Ranging from 9th-Century iron work to modern cut-glass, the photographs (all of which are fully described and commented on) include carved wooden weaving tools; embroidered and woven wall hangings; embroidered brides' cushions; earthenware plates with painted designs; modern stoneware; medieval wooden chests; modern wrought iron candlesticks; ornamental buttons, buckles and lacing rings; modern glassware and crystal; wooden cradles, cupboards, trestle tables and carved clocks; wall paintings representing biblical scenes; and much more. Swedish energy, skill and love of beauty radiate from every page.

The charm, good taste and cheerfulness of these articles will appeal to this book to many different people for many different reasons.
