IN THE LAST few years the world has begun to recognize that at the heart of the Middle East crisis is the “Palestinian Problem”, yet the myth persists that the Palestinians are little more than a group of ragged and down-trodden refugees led by ambitious desperados for whom terrorism offers an outlet for the savagery bred by camp life. The Palestinians explodes this myth by giving a voice to the people: the the old men who were children when the Balfour Declaration prepared the way for the exodus from Palestine; to the children who were born in the diaspora and who are now willing to contemplate certain death in a guerrilla war rather than surrender the right to their homeland.
The Palestinians is about individuals - lawyers, doctors, diplomats, craftsmen, soldiers, fighters and peasants. Through them the books explores the crisis of a people without a land, demonstrating that “the palestinian problem” is not an abstract issue but an urgent human tragedy.
Donald McCullin, photographer, has won the World Press Photographer Award as well as the Warsaw Gold Medal.
