THIS BOOK is intended to be a straightforward account of the development of mankind's technology from its origins to the end of the period of Roman domination in the opening years of the fifth century A.D. It has been written specifically with the general reader in mind, and for this reason a certain amount of historical and technical paraphernalia has been abandoned. Technological terms have been reduced to the barest minimum, and reference to the period system commonly used in archaeological writing. The normal habit of giving references in the text has also been foregone, since it was felt that little service would have been done by belaboring the reader with the mass of periodical literature that this type of reference would have involved. In lieu, a Bibliographical Note has been added at the end of the book; from it the chief sources of reference may be deduced.

It is quite impossible to thank adequately all those who have in one way or another helped me during the preparation of this book, especially the many colleagues with whom over the years I have been able to discuss various problems. To name each and every one would require in itself a volume: to them all I must apologize for this exiguous word of thanks.
