Smith är författaretill en av liberalismens kanoniska skrifter, An Inquiry into the nature and causes of the wealth of nations (1776), i korthet Wealth of Nations. En minst lika viktig text var hans The theory of moral sentiments (1759). Grundtanken är att ekonomisk frihet ökar välståndet i ett land. Den tidigare boken kom redan under Smiths livstid ut i sex upplagor, den senare enbart i en upplaga. I den för Smith viktigaste boken övergav han efter hand den åsikt som han ständigt tillskrivs officiellt. Smith var också en moralist som ville tala så att folk förstod honom.Stefan Björklund diskuterar vad moralfilosofen Smith stod för liksom hans båda kollegor, både i filosofisk och idéhistorisk mening. Smith bar på ett idéarv från antiken som tvingade honom att ställa frågan om inte egennytta måste balanseras mot det moraliskt goda, mot dygden. Och hos Björklund möter man en kontrasternas Smith, alltså inte bara egoismens apostel utan också hans sociala engagemang.Stefan Björklund är statsvetare och professor emeritus i Uppsala och tidigare bland annat rektor för dåvarandehögskolan i Örebro.
