The campaign which Voltaire fought for the reversal of the judgment on the Huguenot, Jean Calas, and his family has such a contemporary flavour that one finds it hard to remember that it did not all take place in this twentieth century. But the Calas affair started in Toulouse just 200 years ago, when Marc-Antoine Calas committed suicide in 1761. On 10th March the following year the boy's father, still bravely proclaiming the innocence of all who were in his house at the time, and refusing to abjure his faith, died on the wheel for the alleged murder of his son. The story is a moving and terrible one. Had it not come to the ears of Voltaire it might never have been brought to light.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMrs. Nixon divides her book into two parts. The first tells of events up to Jean Calas's execution, with a fascinating picture of the situation of the Protestants in that part of France at the time. Calas was a respected merchant of the town: but, because he was also a Huguenot, there was always a certain precariousness about his position. At the time of the tragedy, his eldest son, Marc-Antoine - a moody young man whose ambition to practise at the Bar had been prevented by decrees against his religion-had been frittering away his time in dissipation. The second son, Pierre, assisted his father in the shop, while Louis, the third, was an apostate and had left home for good. On the evening of October 13, after dining with his parents and Pierre and a friend called Gaubert Lavaysse, Marc-Antoine left the room abruptly.
