It has been written specifically with the general reader in mind, and for this reason a certain amount of historical and technical paraphernalia has been abandoned. Technological terms have been reduced to the barest minimum, and reference to the period system commonly used in archaeological writing. The normal habit of giving references in the text has also been foregone, since it was felt that little service would have been done by belaboring the reader with the mass of periodical literature that this type of reference would have involved.
